The end of year 2008

Again, it's new year eve. Almost every year eve, I blogging about myself. So what's new this year.

Well, first of all, I still fail to marry my girl that I love for 10 years. Please don't ask me why and don't push me. Every beginning of year, I will tell my family, friends or colleague that ask me when I'm going to marry, my standard answer is end of the year. And every new year eve, I will tell everyone sorry I cheat you all again. So, if you ask me when I'm going to marry, then my answer end of next year :)

About work, well finish a huge project this year, but ... Anyway, now busy with two more mega projects at middle east. Very busy.

Last few day, my friend told me he want to get grant from government for his business. I didn't ask much cause my friend always tell me I don't help myself. I think he is right. I always tell the junior that some people work for himself and some people work for the company, it nothing wrong for both of them. Basically, it's something call loyalty. It's either you loyalty to yourself or you loyalty to the company that you work. Either one you will still get the pay and the only different is result of the work.

Anyway, forget about work today and continue talk about myself.

What else... marry... work... ... ok, camera :)

Still need sometime to practice. I try to post a photo for the new year eve later.

What else ... ... ... Nothing special to write already :_( I'm a boring man.

Ok la, just wish you all a very happy new year and may your wish come true next year. And so myself, I wish I can marry a pretty lady next year, win a big sweep, get a nice Camry, get a bungalow, get a pretty mistress hahahaha...

Wish 2009 a good luck year for me :)

Photography

Ok, another poisoning topic to discuss :)

Anyway, not planning to write too long, just want to introduce some web page that me and my wild horse (thanks to Sam for intro these poisoning material to us) think is the best photo from internet. Too bad to tell you that, it's all in Korean. So just try you luck to click here and there to browse it blindly.

1. Healing brush
One of the best and most preferable site. Most of the photo is very well compose. And Sam favorite.

2. Photobee
Lot of nice photos but warning this site contain adult elements.

3. RaySoda
This one also contain some adult elements.

You will spend hours to look at these photos.

I discussed with Sam on what make a photo well compose.

Is it because got pretty girl? I said not 100% but pretty model do make the photo look pretty since the object/focus itself is a pretty girl. Try to imaging ML in the photo :)

Why Korean photographer can compose so nice photo? Is it because the environment is pretty? Basically I agreed that. Malaysia do have some nice place, but don't try to imaging a yellow, purple or pink color leaf dropping down from the tree. It wouldn't happen.

Train ourselves with better skill so when the model and environment is ready, it is time for us to compose the beautify photo.

DSLR part II

Back to few weeks earlier, I posted a blog on DSLR and yesterday finally I get myself one, Canon 450D at PIKOM PC fair 08.

Initially, I want to go there to survey the DSLR market and also help my sister to upgrade her PC and help her to get a printer. But once I enter the hall, the first thing in my eye is the Canon camera booth, and I know I'm dead meat. After thinking and walk around, I finally go back to that booth to get one. What is the offer?

Body and standard kit lens (18-55mm), free a Manfrotto tripod, 4G SDHC, Canon EOS bag and Ximplify web host (anyone interest to buy over from me?) and not forget a painful swap on my credit card for RM2599 (as compare to outside RM2799 and lelong.com RM2400 with shop warranty only, RM2599 is the best price I have). The photo:

My sister playing with the tripod :) thanks her for become my first model

Actually thinking of getting a DSLR for quite sometime, just every time see but never dare to think of buying it. Well, thanks to the colleagues around me poison each other on the photography thingy and after seeing my Lumix camera, I know I can't satisfied with that machine anymore. It doesn't mean I don't like the camera, just sometime it can't perform up to my expectation. Anyway, it's a good camera that with me for so many years.

Back to what urge me for a SLR. Well, portrait. I wish to take some nice photos for my girl since she told me she is ugly every time I try to took her photo. So, I hope my new monster will help me to proof her wrong.

Ok, for my colleagues especially for my wild horse, Mr. Sam, and my lonely friend, Mr. Toh, join me to the darkness wahhahahahaha... and thanks all for poisoning each other and finally "we" won to poison the first victim, the genius (or maybe sohai) :)

Happy photograph!

Sick movie

"Thanks" to Mr.Toh for introducing a sick movie, The Other Boleyn Girl. A really sicked movie I ever watch.

1. There are no pretty girl in the movie, at least I personally didn't see any.
2. 50% of the words that they are using is not inside my dictionary.
3. And the worst, SICK story.

Make me feel sick and I can't wait to go Bahrain to kill that loser for asking me to get him this movie.

Ok, if you want to take MC tomorrow, please go watch that movie, or else don't waste your time for that stupid movie.

DSLR

Since last month, my colleague and I try to poison my wild house, Mr. Sam, to get a DSLR since he is only engineer in my office that have artistic sense. We even offer to pay for 10% of the camera price on top of all discount for a camera, anyhow the tactic did not success.

Well, from time to time we still browse through people's photo and discuss.

The first question is that, is a camera that make that photo look pretty and attractive? After do some searching, my answer is no. You can try to see this which is using Canon 5D and this which is taken using Canon 1D Mark III. The second one is surely is a rubbish, wasting time.

Ok, you may say the first one pretty cause got girl which maybe a model. Anyway, my point is without a skill and the tools (camera, lens) and the environment, a Mark III can't even beat my Lumix.

Now, second question, is lens important? The answer is yes, cause that the only way to let the camera to tell you how you (or it) see this world. I like Mr. Bokeh's photo, and he like his 55mm f1.2 lens very much. I think that lens really can let you focus on something. Anyway sometime he is over bokeh his photos. As compare to similar lens by this, for sure I like the first one although the second one is good also.

So my conclusion is, to take a photo, you need a camera; to take a nice and attractive photo, you need a camera (probably a SLR), a lens that can help you focus and emphasis the story that you want to record and tell people how you feel about the scene and the last which is most important, the skill. Without skill, these fantastic tools can't even beat Lumix FX7.

And, it is very personal taste when talking about art. Maybe a photo for you is just a normal photo but for someone else it maybe a good or a rubbish photo. Just like some people like hardrock and some just pissed with that kind of music.

Anyway, photo is the only tool that can stop the time for that moment. Take more picture and tell your grandchildren how is the world look like when you are young.

Footnote: I've end out poisoned myself this time :(

Flying with Gulfair guide

First of all, I just want to express my feeling on this airline. Please give me few second.

WHAT THE FUCK YOUR FUCKING COMPANY GIVING THIS FUCKING IDIOT LOUSY AIR SERVICE TO US.

Anyway, because of the price, we still need to use this stupid airline to fly to Bahrain and back to Malaysia. Therefore, here is some guideline for you to make yourself conform.

1. Bring your own earphone.

99% of the earphone supply by the airline is not function. Either totally no sound, or only half got sound, or the earphone only play noise. Just bring your own MP3 player earphone to use in the flight.

2. Fully charge your notebook

There is no such thing as VOD on that flight. So the only way to enjoy the VOD is by using your own notebook. Fully charge your notebook battery can let you enjoy about 4 hours of entertainment.

3. Bring your game console, PSP or DS, if you have.
Get one if possible. To kill the time.

4. Bring sweater when you back from Bahrain airport

Ok, this one really make me frust. They should call it freezer not air-cond, so that the passenger will bring sweater when they enter to the airport. Now I'm damn sick of their stupidity. I wounder which stupid company build this stupid air-cond system.

Ok, that all I can say about the stupid GulfAir, hope this guide can help you to prevent bad time when using this airline.

Thought of the day

Last few weeks, just manage to get some time to have dinner with my friend, which is previously my control subcontractor’s, or a better name SI (system integrator), staff. Now he is a manager of a control company, and I’m still an engineer T_T.

Ok, back to today topic.

When we talk about the young engineers, we got same point of view, what are these engineers thinking? Why they are so like tat? If you don’t understand what I’m tried to say, maybe the following example can make it clear.

When I was an young engineer (getting old already T_T), when I see a cable in the panel, I will go to check the drawing, read manual, buy a cutter and screwdriver and connect the cable.

So what young engineer will do it they see the same cable?

They will say “I don’t know. When can you finish the installation?”

So do you know what I’m tried to explain?

First of all, I’m not promoting and hard sell myself through this blog, cause I don’t need to do that. Secondly, don’t read me wrong, I’m not cocky. And if you thinking I’m cocky, then I would like to apology to you for doing that on you, cause I’m pissed sometime.

I would like to emphasize here that I’m graduate from local university not Oxford, I eat mix rice like you all do, I watch pirated movies also, and I also have 24 hours. Then what make us different?

In Taiwan, there is new term used to describe young generation, especially 80’s, which have good external look, but unable to withstand in working environment. They called it 草莓族 (strawberry group). My sister told me that some of her primary school student does not know how to open a door, cause their “kakak” or maid do it for them. I think that the main reason why this group exists.

My SI told me that I must teach my junior in order for them to catch up my job. But I want to tell everyone that, I don’t keep my knowledge to myself and I willing to teach. However, please don’t come and ask me how to count 1+1 or what is a relay. I’m an engineer not a school teacher; I do not know how to continue if your foundation is still at primary school level.

There is a very famous quote from Internet,

If I cook for you, then you only got 1 meal; but if you learn how to cook, you will not be hunger anymore.
But now these youngsters will ask you to feed them to eat after you have cooked the meal. What the fuck! God please help me.

Footnote: to all young engineers, there is no shortcut to make you a genius. Read, think and apply is the only correct way to lead you to the engineering path.

Happy birthday to Maki Horikita

Just don't know what to say after read her latest news. Wish her good luck.

Bahrian 101

Landed at Bahrian airport since last Friday night. Today is 5th day in Bahrian, still can't say I'm familiar with this place, but I think I can give some offhand information to everyone.

The first thing I would like to say is the currency. Ok, here everything look like very "cheap" cause it only cost you few (1-2) Bahrian Dinar. So if you think, it is cheap then you are death meat. The exchange rate is about RM10 to 1 BD. So be careful when you take out your money. If you willing to give BD1 as tip, please give it to me.

Weather here is hot and humid in summer time (April to Oct), then after October the weather will be as nice as Cameron Highland. I hope it's true.

House / villa is huge. The toilet itself is bigger than my master bed room. Rental is about BD1.5k to BD2k per month. I wish I can own one of these villas that I have visited. The villa that my company rented is near to beach and got big swimming poor and club house. I hope Toh and Ms Chung will enjoy their life there :p (sure Jenson will be jealous.)

Ok, talking about telecommunication. My Maxis friend told me that roaming in middle east is far more expensive than in Europe. So better bring additional phone and get a local phone if possible. Once you get the local mobile phone, the second thing is Internet. Yes, how can an engineer live without access to the Internet. All work will stop if the Internet is not available. I had tried the hotel Internet service and believe me I will never use the hotel internet again if I come here again. BD12 per 24 hours. Better than rob some more the speed is slow.

What I suggest is try to get a Batelco mobile Internet. You can purchase the modem (BD72) and get a 1G data package cost BD10 and BD5 for registration. Or you can try to get the sim without the modem. I haven't try that option but I think you can just plug the sim into your 3G mobile phone and use the phone as modem. You can try with 50m data package first which cost BD2 (you still need to pay the registration fee BD5).

Then regarding meal. Just prepare yourself for expensive food. The food is around BD2-3 per meal. So for those who plan to stay here longer, just try to get some cans food and try to learn how to cook. It will help to maintain your vitamin M in Bahrian.

The taxi service is another factor to reduce your vitamin M. There is nothing less that BD5 once you get into the taxi. Try to get a car, an Estima 8 seater only BD5k, I wish I can own one and fetching the girls around. Ok, talk about girl, most of the time you can only see girl that only showing their two eyes. Sometime, you can see some Arabian girl face and believe me they are much pretty than your thought. So for those single, you may try to get an Arabian girl, what you sacrifice is a thin layer of skin from your litter brother :)

Will leaving tomorrow, will coming back soon and will fly here very frequent next year.

Working poor

According to the wiki, working poor mean

...individuals and families who maintain regular employment but remain in relative poverty due to low levels of pay and dependent expenses.

I'm not sure what is the threshold that is defined by "relative poverty". But I believe, if I'm not in the group of working poor, then I'm nearby the boundary.

Wish to get rich soon.

If hardworking can make you rich, then the statistic will be meaningless.

Doha

Manage to visit the city of Doha while waiting for the transit back to Bolehland from Sudan.

The image of Doha for me is dusty, humid and hot. The city is booming. Lost of high rise building is under construction. Too bad, the humidity is too high causing my camera condensate and I was not able to capture any night scenery that night :(

Hope to visit the Pear of Qatar when it completed.

Sudan update

Last post, I’ve mentioned that the first impression of Sudan is dust, sand and heat. But I think I’m wrong when I was in Palogue and Jabalayn site. I should change it to wide, windy and chill. Sound great, ya, you should come here to enjoy the weather. The temperature at Palogue camp is so low until I regret I didn’t bring thicker shirt.

First thing you should not do in Sudan is photograph. Taking photo in Sudan may cause you sitting in the lockup for a day to few weeks. I start to wonder why. There are only two reasons I can think of; first, the environment is explosive (which I think not true), second, the people or maybe government want to hide their country to the world. Well, I also will try to hide my mistake if possible :). Try to imaging when you go visit a country and taking photo will risk you, are you still going to that place for vacation? The answer is clear, no. The camera is invented for you to keep and share your memory; no other method is better or clearer than showing you a photo or a video. So, if you plan to come to Sudan for vacation, please tell me so I can laugh at your stupidity. Anyway, I have taken my risk to take some photos to share with you :)

In Khartoum, most of the building is like normal building that we see everyday. But one thing about the city is that, there are not planned. You can see building here and there. It will be a nightmare when the city booming. After the capital, along the road to Jabalayn, you will see the building getting shorter and shorter. After Jabalayn, no more tar road and the houses is getting smaller and change shape from round. I remember I saw this kind of houses when I play Civilization, when the date is still in B.C. Surprisingly, I still able to see these house with my own naked eye in year 2008. I don’t know how many years it will take to change these houses to a double storey link house.

Talking about Jabalayn, jabal mean mountain and jabalayn is the plural of mountain. So the Jabalayn mean city of mountains. Sudan is so flat until you don’t need to engage your car hand break when stop, cause it wouldn’t go anyway with it flatness. So a small hill wills be great scenery. But don’t try to take the photo; you may sit inside the lockup for few days for taking the photo.

I’m not care too much on the food. But the canteen at Palogue makes you stop taking your meal. I don’t know how to eat with flies flying around. Yak…, make me feel sick when I think of that. Canteen at Jabalayn is quite clear and the food is ok and huge size. I feel like eating two meals in a single meal here. I think I getting fatter, hope my girl don’t notice that. Anyway, nothing taste better than bah kut teh and nasik lemak. Eat at Sudan stall is like eating at 5 star hotel, the food is just too expensive. It's almost a 20USD per person per meal. It's killing me, the food price.

People are friendly, I guess, they take about 15 minute just to say hi. According to their culture, they not only greet that person, but their family and other family member. I think no possible for us, because a 15 minute phone charges are too expensive :)

Donkey is everywhere, I remember only in the 1001 night story, people is riding on the donkey, but here you can see it at every corner. I wonder why there are no horses here. The conclusion I get is that donkey is stronger and tougher than horse that why only donkey is able to stay under these condition. Also proven, donkey is more stupid than horse :)

And the last thing I heard in Sudan is that man here has more than a wife. Well, some are so called “temporary” or worst “contract”. Not sure how these terms can be accepted, but mostly because the gap between the rich and poor is too wide. Once you got money, you can buy anything you want, and the poor willing to sell anything they have. I heard Nick told me that, they all are 8.3”, not sure how true is that, haha…

Ok, hope to get back soon, because I heard the ICC is going to arrest the Sudan president for the Darfur case tomorrow.

Wish me good luck.

Sudan day 1

After sit in side the stupid plane for more than 10 hours with a transit at Doha, finally reach Sudan. The weather according to colleague is OK, around 35 something. Got lot of wind.

Eat at a huge meal, a steamed rice with chicken (it is 1/2 chicken), I think the food is for two persons. Everything is expensive here, the meal cost about 10USD per person.

Then as usual but some drink and thing that need to bring to site.

Once back to hotel, sleep is the only thing I want to do, almost 36 hours no sleep since Thursday. Eye also can't open -_-zzzzzzzz

Sand, dust and heat, is the only image I have now for Sudan. Will try a better site of Sudan, hopefully :)

Dinstein teach Chinese

Morning everyone, today I want to teach you a Chinese word.

仙家

OK, everyone please pronounce with me 仙(xian) 家(jia). And in Cantonese we pronounce as "xing ka", and in Dinglish, we pronounce as "xinger"

Now I explain what is the meaning of these words.

仙 mean a legendary celestial beings that have special magic or power and can live eternally, when we put the word 家 at the back of a word, it become a noun. For example, 政治 mean politic, and 政治家 mean politician.

Originally, we use this word on some human beings that have extraordinary knowledge or extraordinary power and most of them are extraordinary long life.

Now we use this word on some so called specialists because they are so legendary that all you know about that person is through some fantastic "successful" story.

Here are some examples from my daily life.

There was a project that build a steel tank inside a concrete tank. Somehow the steel tank is leaking which is a bad news for the builder. Fortunately, there is a specialist in tank leaking detection come to the save the day. The specialist start to present their "successful" stories and the magical way they solve the problem. As usual the builder's bosses are so impressed with the specialist. Therefore, the bosses employ the specialist with some huge amount of fees.

The first time, the specialist came to site and install some instruments, which is look like a mike or sound receiver on the external of the tank and hook up to their old PC (legendary Pentium 1 133MHz), and they start the legendary program which is run on DOS. All the builder's engineers are expecting something like a 3D rendering of a wall that indicate the leaking holes. But somehow the specialist give the engineers some numbers. And as usual, these numbers are just a number, meaningless number. After the unsuccessful try, the specialist give some "reasons" on the failure of their technique and they proposed another method which is similar but this time they have to do it inside the tank. After draining the water and some preparation works, the specialist come to site with their legendary equipment, which is look like a mike or sound receiver that will detect the leaking compressed air sound. And the result, well, I don't want to mention much here. The most funniest story is that all the builder's sohai engineers went into the tank and use soap to detect the leaking air.

The second story is about a project which need to lift a big chiller to the mid floor of a 50++ stories building. As usual the specialist is approach to the bosses on their fantastic stories. As usual the bosses is impressed with their good presentation skill and the specialist come out with a solution that to use a huge crane, about 500 tons, which is few hundred time larger than a chiller, and lift the chiller into the building through the gap of the windows, which a blind also can tell you it is too small. Let see how is the result in the near future.

I was once saw a control specialist that build 2 pages only SCADA, a electrical specialist that replace a fuse with wire, a heater specialist that supply a oversize heater that melt the motor insulation, a pump specialist that supply a wrong size pump impeller, etc.

There are lot of specialists in this world. Some are really an expert, but most are so called a specialist, you can call them a conman but I personally like to call them as xinger. Anyway, they live longer than you think and richer than anyone of us.

I'm extremely a sohai

Just went to the factory training yesterday, so I have completed 1/3 way to Sudan. The next thing to do is go for immunization. I hope I wouldn't cry of those needles TT. I also not sure the company will say "This is your personal thing, company already included in your allowance, and you need to pay for that!". Ya, who know what the management will do to "save" the company from losing money again.

Talking about Sudan, previously the supplier agreed to sent a man go there to troubleshoot their equipment, but after the war news and the crashed flight, their company have rejected the job cause they care more for their worker. So I'm pig-sold in this case. How much I get? I think a lot, RM200 per day, but not sure including the meal or not? I will become rich after 2 weeks. Hey, we have to thankful to company for giving me allowance and sold me to the Sudan.

Compare to my ex-subcond, Mr. Voon, he is poor thing. If you follow his blog, that guy is really a poor thing. You see, he have been to Ukraine and Istanbul on April, Taiwan on May, then now he is at Spain. I heard, he is going to Korea next month. Really kesian him going to that kind of places. Sudan is much better.

I'm going to KK on Monday to find fault on the control system which build by a chiller specialist. I don't know how to find their fault since they are specialist and I'm only deadwood and build failure system. Hope can come back in 1 piece after commenting their system. As usual I need to pay for my own air ticket first and claim back after a month in order to finance the losing money company. And this time I will pay for my own food cause I feel malu to let company to reject my RM7 prebook flight food again. Too bad can't get extra colleague to go there cause I heard the company losing money again for that project.

Anyway, engineer is always being victimized, and the manager always lose manage the project/money. Just pray for me for coming back safely from Sudan, hope the flight can up and land smoothly, no war, don't sick and the chiller can just run smoothly once I'm there.

Joke

The following joke is not created by me. I just translate it from a friend. So, please don't catch me, I'm still single and virgin #^_^# and I want to marry soon.

Malaysian, Japanese and US doctors meet at the international seminar.

Very nice movie and it is call Renai Shashin (恋愛写真) also. The author of Heavenly Forest using Renai Shashin as his new book title and based on this movie story. But if you watch both of the movie, there are only two areas are in common; first, it's about photography and second, the main actor and actress is using same name for both movie. However, it is two very different story. A must watch movie :)

I'm soulless

I'm not sure when it started, until recently I found out that I'm soulless.

Everyday I repeat and repeat the same task that I did yesterday or last week. You can say there is no movement, but I would say I'm circling with no progress.

I'm an engineer full with energy and dream when I just graduate. I continue improve my knowledge, cause I know if I stop I will no able to catch the technology. But unfortunately, I think I missed it :(

I wish I can found my way to catch back the train and continue my journey.

Are you ready?

Ok, Bolehland government announce the increment of the petrol from RM1.92 to RM2.70, which is RM0.78 or 40% increment.

So what happen next? Everything will up. The transportation fees are up, therefore, everything directly related or non-directly related are up. Those goods will not walk itself to the market. Do you think, this is the worst case? No! the next increment is on August, which is 2 months from now. At that time, the petrol price will be open to fluctuate according to market price. So, what is the price? It's > RM4.00.

As usual our PM make announcement that they will not increase the price today and will study on the petrol price. The next minute, as usual he change his fucking mind and announce the increment immediately today. I saw cars queuing on the petrol station to get the last drop of cheat petrol. Roads those are usually free moving are jam because too many drivers are trying to save some petrol money.

So what are the direct impact on me? I used to use around RM350 per month for my petrol and for new price, I will need to pay extra around RM150 per month and in other word, RM1800 per year. This is not yet including others increment.

So what can we do?
You can't do anything cause the government is not belong to the peoples, it's belong to some fucker. And we are so sohai to select those fuckers to work for us.

If you are interested, read this about the RM600 billion story.

What is the impact to Malaysia and Malaysian?

I'm not economist therefore I don't really know what actually going to be happen (you can read this). And from the engineer's point of view, it is going to be a very serious inflation.

Whether you like it or not, or you're happy or not, the Bolehland government will not pay a fuck of consideration nor sympathy to you. Just prepare yourself for the next wave.

Good luck!

Engineer = freak?

Quote from Dilbert comic strip,

You're an engineer, everything you say is abnormal.

I'm not sure how true is this statement, if it's not 100% true, then I think it should not less than 90% :)

Engineer is like detective, we talk based on logic and facts, and sometime we are magician, whether to hide the truth or to amuse the client is not part of this discussion. Therefore, the manager look at us like freak, abnormal person, cause they never know what are we talking about.

We don't know how tell the manger about the thermodynamic, PID control, Reynolds number, Kirchoff's law, etc. For them, how can a person only talk about numbers and dead peoples name can consider normal. A normal person shall talk about money, cars, womens, watches, pub, drink, etc.

The different between an engineer and the manager is that engineer don't lie but manager did.

And don't lie didn't mean will tell the tru :)

Brunei

Visited to Brunei last week and nothing much I can show since it's a business trip. Only took the panorama photo in front of the hotel.

What I can say about Brunei? I think I would like to use the word WASTED.

According to wiki, the Sultan owned 531 Mercedes Benzs, 367 Ferraris, 362 Bentleys, 185 BMWs, 177 Jaguars, 160 Porsches, 130 Rolls-Royces, and 20 Lamborghinis (reported on 26 Oct. 2007). Ok, what the fuck, almost 2000 cars. I don't know how much is the cost of these cars but I know I can't even own one of these for the rest of my life.

Some more,

... the sultan has a Boeing 747-400 furnished with gold plated furniture, and
his official residence is the Istana Nurul Iman, with 1,788 rooms, 257 bathrooms, and a floor area of 2,152,782 square feet (200,000 m²), undisputedly the world's largest palace.

Is Brunei people rich? I doubt that. If the king is so rich, why can’t he make their country and the peoples rich? After listen to one of the contractor, I think I understand why. In order to control your man, make them happy and don't give too much.

Sound familiar? Ya, I’m working in this kind of company. I'm freely running around, the salary wouldn't make me hunger nor make me rich. And it's dangerous actually. Too much of spoon feeding make you lost of native skill to fight the world.

Anyway, it's a nice trip, hope next time I can go to the “Brunei bay” and take some photos for you all.

Pluck from the sky

When talking about engineering, we deal with numbers. Most of the time, beside formula, we use also constants and factors. For non-technical person, they are wonder where we get the figure, but for us, we know we didn’t pluck it from the sky.

Where we get those figures?

There are many ways. First, from books, research papers, published technical information. Normally we call these kinds of numbers as constant. Like speed of light, c, is equal to 299792458 m/s. How to get this figure is a long story and if you interested, you may read the following wiki.

The other way of getting the number is from experience, rule-of-thumb and common practice. For example, we use 1 pa/m friction loss when sizing the air-cond duct. Why? Well, it just a factor that everyone is practice when sizing the duct. For different application, we use different factor in sizing. There is a math and theory behind it but we are just engineer not scientist, therefore, using a practiced figure shall not be harmful, unless you choice it wrongly.

And the final way to get the number is by trial-and-error. Well, this is a hard way, but when both the two mentioned methods to get factor/constant are not available, we need to do some guessing or a better word is reverse engineering. This is commonly use when study people’s design and when not much of detail information left by the designer. In this case, guessing and reverse engineering is the only way to know the mind of a designer. It needs a wise guy to guess the mind of a genius /wahaha. If you knowledgeable enough, most of the time, you can hit very near to the target.

So, after this, if you saw some numbers pop up from the words, please don’t say we are pluck from the sky, it is not so easy to get all these numbers and we also don’t have time to tell or explain to you how to get these since you may not from engineering stream. And actually, there is nothing left on the sky already /XD

The furthest distance

你挥霍了我的崇拜;
我戒掉了我的溺爱.

Learn how to say thank you

If someone had helped you either by your instruction or offer from him/her, please thank him/her sincerely from bottom of your heart no matter what the result is.

Please don’t fuck them, or humiliate them or give a black face look. Human feeling is weak, everyone deserve a respect. Either you fuck them or you thank them, it’s just a different word, why not use some word that make both party happy, especially someone that already try to help you? I still remember my teacher told me, word is like a sword, it can kill somebody (soul) in no time.

I’m very low EQ, although maybe my IQ is slightly higher, my feeling is as fragile as a mirror, once broken, it can’t back to the previous shape, so please remember don’t fuck me or give me black face. Thank you.

How to create an intelligent fuckup control system

Objective: To prevent bloodsucker client refuse to pay after project end.

Reason: Engineering seems to be "free" for most of the people, but time is not free. Time is money. Whether the hardware cost is cheap or expensive, we still need to feed the engineer with rice.

Initial step, once after successful of commissioning the control system, a "Welcome" screen will be showed at the SCADA just like when you install the Windows. The user needs to agree to the terms and conditions before they can start to use the control system. Therefore, remember to include a term say that if the client refuse to pay after a certain period, the system will refuse to work or go crazy :)

Once the agreement has been digitally agreed, an initial bit will be sent to PLC to activates the hidden sequence.

Before I proceed to the next step, the key of success for this system are:

1. All the control must be done in PLC.
2. The PLC program need to be encrypted or password protected.

Ok, now the user is using the SCADA happily. Day after day, and it is invoice time. So a message will popup on the SCADA screen and said something like this:

Thank you for using the control system done by [company name]. We hope you are happy using it. Anyway, our engineers need to pay their car loan and take care their girl friend(s), so I hope you will pay us punctually in order to keep my engineer continue work for me. If you already make a payment, kindly key in the payment code in the box below. Thank you.

Payment Code : _______________________

PS, Don’t try to brute force the code, I will not responsible for typo that you make and please don’t ignore this also.

Ok, at this point there will be two possibilities; the client tries to guess the code or the client pay to get the code. If the client tries their luck, a warning message will warn the client if they guess it wrongly and after three tries, the fuckup sequence will be activated. If the client ignores the message, the fuckup sequence will be automatically activated after seven days from the end of "trial period".

Now, let say the client agreed to pay you the bad debt, so you will give them the code to let them continue using the control system happily. Another key of success is you must create few temporary deactivation codes and a total deactivation code. Say, the client agreed to pay you but only partial or a bounce check. In this case, don’t worry, let them enjoy another cycle of happiness and when the time come, the warning message will pop up again :). This time they client will beg you like dog. Only give the total deactivation code after you have receive all the payment.

Until this stage, I would like to share some fuckup sequences with you all.

1. Basic fuckup sequence
This is the most peaceful and basic fuckup level. Basically you just need to deactivate the whole control system. So the operator need to operate the plant at local mode, no PID tuning, no report, no trending, no alarm. Most of the people like to use this kind of fuckup sequence when they protest. The damage level: 0-30%.

2. Professional fuckup sequence
In this level of fuckup sequence, the control system will still keep on running, but sometime it work, sometime it don’t. When the operator calls the pump to run, it goes run the cooling tower, or when the operator calls for stop, the system just ignore the command, or run the chiller at night when no load is required and stop the chiller at noon and let those operators run up and down. The damage level: 40%-60%.

3. The ultimate fuckup sequence
I start to like the word ultimate, it feel so powerful when using this word ;). In this level, the control system will try to show who the boss is. When the operator calls to run the pump, the pump will run but the valve will off, and it will intermittently run and stop the pump and chiller. Then if the system got ice storage, try to run the ice storage pump to maximum speed in the morning and pump it into the heat exchanger and let the -5 deg. c solution freeze the water in the heat exchanger and let it burst. The damage level: 80%-100%.

So to all the owner and client, we, the control engineer, is very kind person. We work non stop 365x24x7 every day, we try our best to make you happy and we also hope to buy a new luxury car or new luxury house like you. Therefore please pay us the engineering fees which is actually exchanged with our knowledge and time. It is not very expensive compare to your cars or houses, so pay us and you can sleep in peace. Thank you.

Admit it when you are wrong!

Most of the time, we try to blame someone or something else if something when wrong. I heard before that a pump supplier blame the electrical turbine is actually causing the pump rotate faster than usual therefore the flow rate is higher and cause the pump is running in higher kW. But the truth is that he forgot (or maybe lazy or uncoordinated) to trim his pump.

I was once heard also that an inverter will cause the pump burn due to the voltage supplied from the inverter is lower that 3 phase voltage O_o. Maybe I should use a car battery to boom the pump.

Also a supplier told me that the meter that he supplied to me need to install a converter to filter the noise due to that my plant is filled with extra heavy noise. But none of my other instruments are affected by that so called noise. Maybe I should install the meter inside a 10" thick stainless steel panel and ground it.

Lot and lot of nonsense explanation from the so called specialist, expert, genius, professional, etc. Will it be more simple just say "I'm sorry that I had make a mistake, I will try to solve it." Everyone make mistake, some are big, some are small. If you can't solve the mistake that you make immediately, then apology, don't try to blame others. It make people irritating and shame on ourself. Chinese idiom said, face is given by others, but pride is lost due to ourself (hopefully you can understand my English :p)

A mistake is always a mistake, the only different is that don't try to cheat. You are not so genius that you can hide the truth. Me can :)

Cameron Highland

Finally I went to Cameron Highland with my girl last week after planning to go there since last year.

It's no very cool at Cameron, very nice temperature, round 25 degree C. Having a steamboat dinner is the best meal ever.

There are lot of jungle tracking activities available, but I think most of the people enjoy plucking the strawberry than doing out door activity. We only went to Parit waterfall and Robinson waterfall. Too dangerous to do the remaining jungle activities alone. It will be a very enjoyable activity if more people are participate.

Ok, this month is consider my holiday month and I had spent most of the time outside also lot of money :(. Need to work hard to earn more money so I can plan my second holiday month this year.

The next stop, I wish to visit the Angkor Wat. Anyone interested?

Habit

Today, I got an idea on how to wake up early.

Say, you normally wake up at 8AM and you are alway late to work. So you plan to wake up early a bit but you just can't used to it.

Here how you do it.

You can adjust the alarm in the way that each day the alarm is bring early a minute. So the first day, the alarm on on 7.59AM, and the second day 7.58AM, and so on. You would feel the different of 1 minute. Therefore, after a month, you are able to wake up on 7.30AM. You may continue this practice until you able to reach office before your boss :)

But some habits will kill you.

The experiment showed that, if you throw a frog into the boiled water, the frog able to respond it and jump out from the boiled water. But if you put the frog inside the water and slowly boil it. The frog is dead meat at the end.

Just like human, if you start to accept your daily life, your work, your income, your position, etc, you are become slave to your company and you lost your ability to fight for your own right and benefit.

So before it become your habit, think about the frog first. Enjoy your working life.

Team building

Just finished 2 days team building at Genting Highland. I heard the course is very expensive. Not sure why my director want to spend these money for it. For sure he got his own reason, only time will tell us the truth.

Back to the team building course. I have to admit that the speaker is a great speaker (that why the fee is so expensive). As usual these kind of course will be very similar to those self-help books that I read. Anyway, just want to share some points will you all.

1. Work for fun, not for money.

If you read all my blogs, you will know that I or most of us are applying this now. If I had chosen to work for money, I think I had left this company for long time ago, and I will never stop changing my job. However, I think the speaker hide some terms and conditions from us. The above statement will only be valid if and only if;

i. You are not over underpaid.
ii. Someone (especially the management lever) appreciate you contributions to the company.

Based on the two conditions that I mentioned above, we can conclude that money is not the only factor in keeping a worker, indeed it's one of the main factors. It also told us that money is one of the most effective way to show gratitude and appreciation to the worker.

2. Work as a team

In the other word, it mean teamwork. So far I had to admit that not everyone is in the team or even some are in the team, they are more like a parasite to us. Anyway, I glad that I able to name most my colleagues and their role in the team.

... think more we and less I in daily work.

The main obstacle in building a team is that most of the people only want credit but not shit. Some people are very good at taking credit and some are very good at making shit, and some is very good at cleaning the shit. Who are going to be awarded is depend on how cleaver is the boss.

3. Love your colleague.

Ok, need to thank for my colleagues for giving me "I like you" card. Sometime, we like someone even though they look like a gangster. Basically, we like someone not because they are handsome, pretty, rich, high post, etc, but because we can accept the attitude of that person and you feel safe when working with them.

Well it's enjoy to have this course and have fun with the colleagues after the company trip although I'm sick these few days maybe due to consume too much of alcohol :)

Bangkok trip

Just came back from Bangkok trip. It's a fun trip and tire also. I still feel sleepy today, luckily I'm on leave.

Bangkok is a very nice city, lot of shopping places, thing are cheap, exciting night life, culture & 18x shows. I'm quite surprise that Bangkok is much more modern than I thought. Maybe one day she will be ahead of bolehland if we still dreaming that we are at the top of the world.

About the agua (lady boy), some are just so pretty until you don't believe she a man. So never try to drunk at Thailand, you don't know who will sleep beside you until you hear her voice.

The next special show is the Thai Girl show. Well, I don't know how to say it. Just feel pity to them that need to use their most native skill to earn money. I think I should stop supporting those 18x movies :)

Spend quite a lot of monies for this trip. Anyway, it's worth.

I shall start to plan my next trip from now. Hope to show you all another round of nice photo soon.

It's 7AM, why am I here?

It's 7AM and I'm at LCCT waiting my flight to Jakarta. The flight is 9.50AM. So I'm 3 hours earlier than my flight O_o. Don't think I'm Kiasu, although maybe I Kiasi :)

So Limo new policy,

We only serve those customers that agreed to take the Limo 3 1/2 hours earlier than his/her flight.

Ok, so policy is policy although I know I will be waiting here for 3 hours for nothing. Because of same Limo driver mistake, we need to suffer this policy.

I start to wonder the coming trip, the flight is 8AM, so are we need to take the Limo around 4.30AM. What a waste of time.

I'm using Air Asia to go Jakarta for WORKING, because MAS is very expensive. I think I had contributes 50% of the company annual profit this year.

My Girl 2003

It's a very lovely Thai movie, I'd been searching for sometime and finally manage to watch it. Really a very nice movie. Worth to spend you time to watch it.

It's showed since Oct. 2003 but only until lately I knew about this movie. Not sure they don't promote it or Malaysians are addicted to CG movies and those superstar movies.

It's just a very simple story and it remind me about Shunji Iwai movies. Simple and no pressure when watching it.

About the actors, Charlie Trairat is the cute little boy named Jeab, can't found much information on net. And the lovely little girl, Noi-Naa, is acted by Focus Jirakul. She is 10 years old at that time, and now she is a pretty lady.

Can't open Office 2007 file?

Recently more and more Office 2007 format file flowing around. If you still prefer to use older version or no money to get the Office 2007 or can't found pirated copy :) then here is a solution for you.

Click on the bottom link, it will bring you to Microsoft website (don't worry, I don't phishing) and download the FileFormatConverters.exe and install. Now you can able to open the Office 2007 files.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466

It's actually a program that will handle the new file extension (*.docx, *.xlsx, *.pttx) and convert it to previous Office format and open it will old Office application. Sooner or later, we all will need to upgrade to new Micro$oft Office :(

Some information about the latest Office format, basically it's a zipped XML file. If you don't know what is XML then go to this link. If you like to know more about XML for Office, go here

Why Employees Leave Organisations?

Very nice article.

WHY EMPLOYEES LEAVE ORGANISATIONS ? - Azim Premji, CEO- Wipro

Every company faces the problem of people leaving the company for better pay or profile.

Early this year, Mark, a senior software designer, got an offer from a prestigious international firm to work in its India operations developing specialized software. He was thrilled by the offer.

He had heard a lot about the CEO. The salary was great. The company had all the right systems in place employee-friendly human resources (HR) policies, a spanking new office, and the very best technology, even a canteen that served superb food.

Twice Mark was sent abroad for training. 'My learning curve is the sharpest it's ever been,' he said soon after he joined.

Last week, less than eight months after he joined, Mark walked out of the job.

Why did this talented employee leave ?

Arun quit for the same reason that drives many good people away.

The answer lies in one of the largest studies undertaken by the Gallup Organization. The study surveyed over a million employees and 80,000 managers and was published in a book called 'First Break All The Rules'. It came up with this surprising finding:

If you're losing good people, look to their immediate boss .Immediate boss is the reason people stay and thrive in an organization. And he 's the reason why people leave. When people leave they take knowledge, experience and contacts with them, straight to the competition.

'People leave managers not companies,' write the authors Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman.

Mostly manager drives people away?

HR experts say that of all the abuses, employees find humiliation the most intolerable. The first time, an employee may not leave, but a thought has been planted. The second time, that thought gets strengthened. The third time, he looks for another job.

When people cannot retort openly in anger, they do so by passive aggression. By digging their heels in and slowing down. By doing only what they are told to do and no more. By omitting to give the boss crucial information. Dev says: 'If you work for a jerk, you basically want to get him into trouble. You don't have your heart and soul in the job.'

Different managers can stress out employees in different ways - by being too controlling, too suspicious, too pushy, too critical, but they forget that workers are not fixed assets, they are free agents. When this goes on too long, an employee will quit - often over a trivial issue.

Talented men leave. Dead wood doesn't.

I want my holiday!!!!!!!!!!

I start on leave since last Wednesday until today, which total 8 days. But I don't feel to have any good sleep in these few days.

1. 6/2 Wed morning, I go home from work cause I need to standby at P1 until the system is running.
2. 8/2 Fri midnight, rush to Serdang Hospital to reset the controller due to power failure. The phone call never stop until the next day morning due to repeated problem.
3. 9/2 Sat morning, go back to Serdang Hospital to recheck the power supply and reset the controller.
4. 9/2 Sat midnight, rush back to Serdang Hospital cause the UPS failed.
5. 12/2 Tue night, rush to P1 cause those sohai don't know that the chiller can't start if the chilled water is too cool. Manually force chiller run.

I don't understand how can an operation and maintenance company employ some sohai to run the plant. Some of the operator don't really know how to use a computer, until the stage that they don't know where is the Windows Start button O_o. I don't know how to describe these sohai. Sometime it make me so frustrated that I nearly come out those f words.

I saw a lot of first class equipments maintain by third class operation. At the end, these system is just a lousy system because no one know how to operate and maintain it. If Malaysian people still think that a control system do not need specialist to maintain, then we will stay forever in the third class world.

And from this lesson, next Chinese new year I will go to vacation, so please don't call me cause I wouldn't be around. I just want to good rest not 24hour standby for call. I'm a engineer not operator. Please respect me. Thank you.

Happy Chinese New Year

Well, 1 year pasted and it's Chinese New Year again.

Ok, don't ask about when I going to give angpao. I don't want to say any bad word these few days. And for those married, remember you still need to give me angpao although I said last year I don't want any. Please tell me girl to marry me this year or else you all need to give me angpao no matter you like it or not.

Then about the conclusion about last year. It not a very good year for me. I had been worked like no day and night, but at the end, I feel like do it for fun and no one care about the hardworking that I had put in. Anyway, once again it's new year so I don't want to say any bad word. I just hope next year I can be more wisely and fair to myself.

Ok, for all my friends, I wish you all Happy Chinese New Year and a prosperity Mickey year.

... and wish me that I can be sold out this year :(

Thought of the day

A kingdom rise when the king trust his men; a kingdom fall when the king trust a man.
