Bahrian 101
Landed at Bahrian airport since last Friday night. Today is 5th day in Bahrian, still can't say I'm familiar with this place, but I think I can give some offhand information to everyone.
The first thing I would like to say is the currency. Ok, here everything look like very "cheap" cause it only cost you few (1-2) Bahrian Dinar. So if you think, it is cheap then you are death meat. The exchange rate is about RM10 to 1 BD. So be careful when you take out your money. If you willing to give BD1 as tip, please give it to me.
Weather here is hot and humid in summer time (April to Oct), then after October the weather will be as nice as Cameron Highland. I hope it's true.
House / villa is huge. The toilet itself is bigger than my master bed room. Rental is about BD1.5k to BD2k per month. I wish I can own one of these villas that I have visited. The villa that my company rented is near to beach and got big swimming poor and club house. I hope Toh and Ms Chung will enjoy their life there :p (sure Jenson will be jealous.)
Ok, talking about telecommunication. My Maxis friend told me that roaming in middle east is far more expensive than in Europe. So better bring additional phone and get a local phone if possible. Once you get the local mobile phone, the second thing is Internet. Yes, how can an engineer live without access to the Internet. All work will stop if the Internet is not available. I had tried the hotel Internet service and believe me I will never use the hotel internet again if I come here again. BD12 per 24 hours. Better than rob some more the speed is slow.
What I suggest is try to get a Batelco mobile Internet. You can purchase the modem (BD72) and get a 1G data package cost BD10 and BD5 for registration. Or you can try to get the sim without the modem. I haven't try that option but I think you can just plug the sim into your 3G mobile phone and use the phone as modem. You can try with 50m data package first which cost BD2 (you still need to pay the registration fee BD5).
Then regarding meal. Just prepare yourself for expensive food. The food is around BD2-3 per meal. So for those who plan to stay here longer, just try to get some cans food and try to learn how to cook. It will help to maintain your vitamin M in Bahrian.
The taxi service is another factor to reduce your vitamin M. There is nothing less that BD5 once you get into the taxi. Try to get a car, an Estima 8 seater only BD5k, I wish I can own one and fetching the girls around. Ok, talk about girl, most of the time you can only see girl that only showing their two eyes. Sometime, you can see some Arabian girl face and believe me they are much pretty than your thought. So for those single, you may try to get an Arabian girl, what you sacrifice is a thin layer of skin from your litter brother :)
Will leaving tomorrow, will coming back soon and will fly here very frequent next year.

Working poor
According to the wiki, working poor mean
I'm not sure what is the threshold that is defined by "relative poverty". But I believe, if I'm not in the group of working poor, then I'm nearby the boundary.
Wish to get rich soon.
...individuals and families who maintain regular employment but remain in relative poverty due to low levels of pay and dependent expenses.

Wish to get rich soon.
If hardworking can make you rich, then the statistic will be meaningless.

Doha
Manage to visit the city of Doha while waiting for the transit back to Bolehland from Sudan.
The image of Doha for me is dusty, humid and hot. The city is booming. Lost of high rise building is under construction. Too bad, the humidity is too high causing my camera condensate and I was not able to capture any night scenery that night :(
Hope to visit the Pear of Qatar when it completed.

Sudan update

Last post, I’ve mentioned that the first impression of Sudan is dust, sand and heat. But I think I’m wrong when I was in Palogue and Jabalayn site. I should change it to wide, windy and chill. Sound great, ya, you should come here to enjoy the weather. The temperature at Palogue camp is so low until I regret I didn’t bring thicker shirt.
First thing you should not do in Sudan is photograph. Taking photo in Sudan may cause you sitting in the lockup for a day to few weeks. I start to wonder why. There are only two reasons I can think of; first, the environment is explosive (which I think not true), second, the people or maybe government want to hide their country to the world. Well, I also will try to hide my mistake if possible :). Try to imaging when you go visit a country and taking photo will risk you, are you still going to that place for vacation? The answer is clear, no. The camera is invented for you to keep and share your memory; no other method is better or clearer than showing you a photo or a video. So, if you plan to come to Sudan for vacation, please tell me so I can laugh at your stupidity. Anyway, I have taken my risk to take some photos to share with you :)
In Khartoum, most of the building is like normal building that we see everyday. But one thing about the city is that, there are not planned. You can see building here and there. It will be a nightmare when the city booming. After the capital, along the road to Jabalayn, you will see the building getting shorter and shorter. After Jabalayn, no more tar road and the houses is getting smaller and change shape from round. I remember I saw this kind of houses when I play Civilization, when the date is still in B.C. Surprisingly, I still able to see these house with my own naked eye in year 2008. I don’t know how many years it will take to change these houses to a double storey link house.
Talking about Jabalayn, jabal mean mountain and jabalayn is the plural of mountain. So the Jabalayn mean city of mountains. Sudan is so flat until you don’t need to engage your car hand break when stop, cause it wouldn’t go anyway with it flatness. So a small hill wills be great scenery. But don’t try to take the photo; you may sit inside the lockup for few days for taking the photo.
I’m not care too much on the food. But the canteen at Palogue makes you stop taking your meal. I don’t know how to eat with flies flying around. Yak…, make me feel sick when I think of that. Canteen at Jabalayn is quite clear and the food is ok and huge size. I feel like eating two meals in a single meal here. I think I getting fatter, hope my girl don’t notice that. Anyway, nothing taste better than bah kut teh and nasik lemak. Eat at Sudan stall is like eating at 5 star hotel, the food is just too expensive. It's almost a 20USD per person per meal. It's killing me, the food price.
People are friendly, I guess, they take about 15 minute just to say hi. According to their culture, they not only greet that person, but their family and other family member. I think no possible for us, because a 15 minute phone charges are too expensive :)
Donkey is everywhere, I remember only in the 1001 night story, people is riding on the donkey, but here you can see it at every corner. I wonder why there are no horses here. The conclusion I get is that donkey is stronger and tougher than horse that why only donkey is able to stay under these condition. Also proven, donkey is more stupid than horse :)
And the last thing I heard in Sudan is that man here has more than a wife. Well, some are so called “temporary” or worst “contract”. Not sure how these terms can be accepted, but mostly because the gap between the rich and poor is too wide. Once you got money, you can buy anything you want, and the poor willing to sell anything they have. I heard Nick told me that, they all are 8.3”, not sure how true is that, haha…
Ok, hope to get back soon, because I heard the ICC is going to arrest the Sudan president for the Darfur case tomorrow.
Wish me good luck.

Sudan day 1

After sit in side the stupid plane for more than 10 hours with a transit at Doha, finally reach Sudan. The weather according to colleague is OK, around 35 something. Got lot of wind.
Eat at a huge meal, a steamed rice with chicken (it is 1/2 chicken), I think the food is for two persons. Everything is expensive here, the meal cost about 10USD per person.
Then as usual but some drink and thing that need to bring to site.
Once back to hotel, sleep is the only thing I want to do, almost 36 hours no sleep since Thursday. Eye also can't open -_-zzzzzzzz
Sand, dust and heat, is the only image I have now for Sudan. Will try a better site of Sudan, hopefully :)

Dinstein teach Chinese
Morning everyone, today I want to teach you a Chinese word.
OK, everyone please pronounce with me 仙(xian) 家(jia). And in Cantonese we pronounce as "xing ka", and in Dinglish, we pronounce as "xinger"
Now I explain what is the meaning of these words.
仙 mean a legendary celestial beings that have special magic or power and can live eternally, when we put the word 家 at the back of a word, it become a noun. For example, 政治 mean politic, and 政治家 mean politician.
Originally, we use this word on some human beings that have extraordinary knowledge or extraordinary power and most of them are extraordinary long life.
Now we use this word on some so called specialists because they are so legendary that all you know about that person is through some fantastic "successful" story.
Here are some examples from my daily life.
There was a project that build a steel tank inside a concrete tank. Somehow the steel tank is leaking which is a bad news for the builder. Fortunately, there is a specialist in tank leaking detection come to the save the day. The specialist start to present their "successful" stories and the magical way they solve the problem. As usual the builder's bosses are so impressed with the specialist. Therefore, the bosses employ the specialist with some huge amount of fees.
The first time, the specialist came to site and install some instruments, which is look like a mike or sound receiver on the external of the tank and hook up to their old PC (legendary Pentium 1 133MHz), and they start the legendary program which is run on DOS. All the builder's engineers are expecting something like a 3D rendering of a wall that indicate the leaking holes. But somehow the specialist give the engineers some numbers. And as usual, these numbers are just a number, meaningless number. After the unsuccessful try, the specialist give some "reasons" on the failure of their technique and they proposed another method which is similar but this time they have to do it inside the tank. After draining the water and some preparation works, the specialist come to site with their legendary equipment, which is look like a mike or sound receiver that will detect the leaking compressed air sound. And the result, well, I don't want to mention much here. The most funniest story is that all the builder's sohai engineers went into the tank and use soap to detect the leaking air.
The second story is about a project which need to lift a big chiller to the mid floor of a 50++ stories building. As usual the specialist is approach to the bosses on their fantastic stories. As usual the bosses is impressed with their good presentation skill and the specialist come out with a solution that to use a huge crane, about 500 tons, which is few hundred time larger than a chiller, and lift the chiller into the building through the gap of the windows, which a blind also can tell you it is too small. Let see how is the result in the near future.
I was once saw a control specialist that build 2 pages only SCADA, a electrical specialist that replace a fuse with wire, a heater specialist that supply a oversize heater that melt the motor insulation, a pump specialist that supply a wrong size pump impeller, etc.
There are lot of specialists in this world. Some are really an expert, but most are so called a specialist, you can call them a conman but I personally like to call them as xinger. Anyway, they live longer than you think and richer than anyone of us.

I'm extremely a sohai

Just went to the factory training yesterday, so I have completed 1/3 way to Sudan. The next thing to do is go for immunization. I hope I wouldn't cry of those needles TT. I also not sure the company will say "This is your personal thing, company already included in your allowance, and you need to pay for that!". Ya, who know what the management will do to "save" the company from losing money again.
Talking about Sudan, previously the supplier agreed to sent a man go there to troubleshoot their equipment, but after the war news and the crashed flight, their company have rejected the job cause they care more for their worker. So I'm pig-sold in this case. How much I get? I think a lot, RM200 per day, but not sure including the meal or not? I will become rich after 2 weeks. Hey, we have to thankful to company for giving me allowance and sold me to the Sudan.
Compare to my ex-subcond, Mr. Voon, he is poor thing. If you follow his blog, that guy is really a poor thing. You see, he have been to Ukraine and Istanbul on April, Taiwan on May, then now he is at Spain. I heard, he is going to Korea next month. Really kesian him going to that kind of places. Sudan is much better.
I'm going to KK on Monday to find fault on the control system which build by a chiller specialist. I don't know how to find their fault since they are specialist and I'm only deadwood and build failure system. Hope can come back in 1 piece after commenting their system. As usual I need to pay for my own air ticket first and claim back after a month in order to finance the losing money company. And this time I will pay for my own food cause I feel malu to let company to reject my RM7 prebook flight food again. Too bad can't get extra colleague to go there cause I heard the company losing money again for that project.
Anyway, engineer is always being victimized, and the manager always lose manage the project/money. Just pray for me for coming back safely from Sudan, hope the flight can up and land smoothly, no war, don't sick and the chiller can just run smoothly once I'm there.

Collage of our life
Very nice movie and it is call Renai Shashin (恋愛写真) also. The author of Heavenly Forest using Renai Shashin as his new book title and based on this movie story. But if you watch both of the movie, there are only two areas are in common; first, it's about photography and second, the main actor and actress is using same name for both movie. However, it is two very different story. A must watch movie :)
